The poet said he could write the saddest verses at night. I cannot say the same. Tonight I can write lines full of hope.
Last weekend marked a before and after in the struggle against the blockade of Cuba and the atrocities to which the United States subjects this people.
Times change, generations change with them, but there is something that does not: the RESISTANCE of a Homeland that lives immersed in the hatred of a foreign government and its leaders. It doesn’t matter if they are democrats or republicans. There have been siren songs, but in the end, they continue to torture a people -silently-, in every possible way in which new wars are waged.
By now, we know full well that hatred is a current, that it is contagious, that it is addictive and something one can die from. In their efforts to make the world hate Cuba and its sovereignty, we must reflect. Have they succeeded? Evidently not. When someone is guilty of a crime, they are usually afraid of being found out. They lie to cover up that fear and continue projecting the image of being powerful. Although, if we delve into this cowardice, more than being discovered in their sins, what frightens them is that it is known what really happens in this archipelago. How, in spite of the material needs that they themselves generate, blaming the Cuban government left and right, this country is moving forward with resistance and has never fallen.
They do not allow socialism to “fail” by lifting the blockade. Are they so afraid of it?
Cuba will not feel out of place again, because -in my vision of hope, which is not at all different from what is coming-, people in the very territory of the oppressors are again taking to the streets asking them to stop.
We saw a sample of their “participatory democracy” last week when three activists (Gail Walker, Calla Walsh and Aleja Rincon) were arrested for trying to talk to Senator Menendez about Cuba. Those who boast of being the pedagogues of democracy in the world should listen when their people go to speak to them. But we already know this flaw with their freedom of expression. Fortunately, the three defenders of justice were let out three hours later with a parting gift of a court summons for next July 12. Nothing comes for free when it comes to fighting for just causes. Cuba knows that better than anyone.
The level of imperial frustration must exceed all kinds of meters when they do not achieve their goals with a territory they have practically next door, and which they used as a casino and other bad activities before the triumph of the Revolution.
They have a history of destroying all the countries they were supposed to liberate. And Cuba continues to be a stone in the shoe of the power of the White House.
A place, by the way, where last Sunday, June 25, more than 500 people marched, not without first displaying a large artistic mosaic with an image that made reference to Cuba’s request to be taken off the list of countries that sponsor terrorism: Off The List, it read.
Sometimes I feel that this is a cheaply scripted comedy, but the sad thing is that it is real. True but sinister. It could not be more mean-spirited than to accuse a country as a sponsor of terrorism, when it has spent its lifetimes teaching people to read and write and sending doctors to the world, to underdeveloped and also developed countries. Let us not forget Italy in the Coronavirus. Let’s not forget the vaccines.
But the play turns against them when the light of this Caribbean nation comes and dazzles them in their own lair. At the rally in front of the White House there were chants, speeches, music and above all, the commitment of many young people and the embrace of generations that are focused on this noble cause to say “this mouth is mine”.
Many of these young people traveled to Havana last May 1st and saw with their own eyes the reality. They touched, felt, breathed. And they came back moved. Together with tireless fighters who have carried Cuba’s mantle along with many Cubans residing in the US and friends from different solidarity groups who were clear; they repeated in unison: “They will not move us”.
And so it will be. We are not and will not be moved. From the Cubans and friends of Cuba who have raised their voices for its cause. For them to let her live in peace. Because this war must cease. Because we will not turn back, not even to gain momentum.
There is still a way to go but we are all here and everywhere we are standing firmly.
